Four weeks out: lock the date and the scope
- Confirm when you receive the new keys and when the old home must be empty.
- Decide whether you want transport only or a full moving service.
- Request a quote and describe the volume, floors and special items.
- Check lifts, stairs and where a van can stop at both addresses.
- Ask the housing company about lift booking and allowed moving hours.
- Decide whether you need packing, cleaning or short-term storage.
A quote needs addresses or postcodes, size, floors, lift details and a preferred date. If the volume is hard to guess, start with the moving calculator.
Three weeks out: sort and get supplies
- Set aside what you will sell, donate or throw away before it is packed.
- Order boxes and protection, or book a packing service.
- Measure large furniture if stairwells are narrow.
- Label a box for documents, medicines and chargers that should stay with you.
Two weeks out: notifications and practical agreements
- Update your address with the parties that need it, in the order your own deadlines require.
- Agree key handover if you will not be present the whole day.
- Reserve the lift in writing if the building requires it.
- Tell us about courtyard gates, codes and parking limits.
One week out: pack daily life in order
- Pack rooms you can live without first. Leave the kitchen and bathroom until later.
- Label boxes by room, not only by contents.
- Keep passports, contracts and medication in a bag that does not go in the van unattended.
- Defrost and empty appliances if they are moving.
The day before: make the route ready
- clear hallways and protect floors if the building asks for it
- confirm the van's stopping place
- charge phones and keep the contact number of the building manager
- pack an overnight bag so the first evening does not depend on finding a box
Moving day and the evening after
One person should answer questions about where items go. After the van leaves, walk through the old home before you return the keys: cupboards, storage cage, balcony and meter cupboard. In the new home, check that reserved large furniture fits before everything else is unpacked.
